Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex damper repair in San Jose typically runs $240 – $390 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate assembly or rebuilding the frame. We stock DuraFlex-compatible damper components on our trucks, and most repairs are completed in a single 60 – 90 minute visit. The usual discovery goes like this: you notice the damper won’t stay open, or it’s stuck shut, or there’s a rattle when the wind picks up. Sometimes it’s the cold draft you feel standing in the living room on a January night. Whatever the first sign, a damper that won’t close properly costs you heat, and one that won’t open fully sends smoke back into the room where it doesn’t belong.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex dampers ship with their aluminum and stainless flue liner systems, and the damper components are built to match the liner diameter, not the other way around. The three sizes we see most often in San Jose homes are 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch round. That matters because a damper plate sized for a 6-inch DuraFlex liner will not seal an 8-inch opening, no matter how many times you adjust the linkage. If you can, look for the etched model number on the damper frame itself, usually a stamp like DF-D6 or DF-D8 indicating the diameter. If the stamp is gone (common after ten-plus years of heat cycling), we measure the liner ID at the throat before quoting anything.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: DuraFlex’s factory damper components are well made, but several aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia match the bolt pattern and seal geometry at a lower parts cost. We’ll quote both when the aftermarket piece is genuinely equivalent, and we’ll tell you when it isn’t. That’s the difference between matching a part number and actually putting the right damper in the right flue. Ashby Chimney San Jose is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we install their components every week.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle or cable feels sloppy, like it’s not connected to anything. The linkage pin or cable ferrule has worn or corroded. This is the most common failure on San Jose chimneys because of seasonal temperature swings that expand and contract the metal.
- The damper won’t stay in the position you set it. The tension spring has lost its grip or snapped. Without proper tension, the damper flops open or closed on its own.
- You feel a cold draft coming down the chimney even when the damper is closed. The seal is no longer seating flat against the frame, often because of warping or a buildup of creosote that’s preventing full closure.
- You hear a metallic rattle on windy days. The damper plate has come loose from its hinge and is vibrating in the throat. Left alone, it can drop further and block the flue entirely.
- Smoke backs into the room when you light a fire. The damper isn’t opening fully, which means combustion gases are spilling into the living space instead of rising up the chimney. This is the one to take seriously right away.

DIY or Call Us?
A damper is not a high-tension component like a garage door spring, but it sits inside the flue where creosote, soot, and decades of combustion residue have been accumulating. You can safely check the obvious things from below: shine a flashlight up the throat, look for obvious gaps or a plate that’s clearly off its hinge, and move the handle to feel for resistance. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto the roof and pull the damper assembly out of a lined flue. Getting the plate past the liner, reseating the frame, and adjusting the linkage tension without gouging the liner wall takes doing it many times. We’d rather spend the time doing it right than see someone turn a $300 repair into a $2,000 liner replacement. If you’re in San Jose and the damper is acting up, call us at (669) 266-5073 and we’ll give you a straight answer over the phone.
FAQs
In San Jose’s climate, a DuraFlex damper should give you 12 to 18 years before the linkage or seal shows meaningful wear. Homes closer to the bay with more humidity often see corrosion on the linkage pins a few years sooner than homes in the drier foothills. If yours failed in under a decade, it’s usually an installation issue, not the material.
Yes, in most cases. When the plate itself is intact and only the spring, cable, or hinge pin has failed, we can replace those individual components without touching the liner. We only recommend a full damper replacement when the plate is warped or the frame has pulled away from the flue. Call (669) 266-5073 for an exact quote, and we’ll tell you which path makes sense before you commit to anything.
Most repairs take 60 to 90 minutes from the time we arrive. If we’re replacing the full damper assembly inside an existing DuraFlex liner, plan on closer to two hours. We carry the common 6-inch and 7-inch components on the truck, so there’s rarely a second trip.
We keep a range of DuraFlex-compatible damper plates, springs, cables, and frame components on our trucks, along with parts from Gelco and HeatShield for cross-compatibility. If we don’t have your exact size, we can usually source it within two to three business days. Call (669) 266-5073 and we’ll confirm what’s on the truck before you book.
