Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps in San Jose, with most installed jobs running between $425 and $780 depending on flue size, cap model, and roof access. Most swaps take under two hours once we’re on site, and we carry the common HeatShield sizes on the truck. The way owners usually find us is simple: they look up during a gutter cleaning or after a storm and notice the cap is gone, dented, or sitting sideways on the flue tile. Or a bird gets into the house through the fireplace and suddenly the missing cap isn’t a small thing anymore.

Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dime: not every “universal” cap fits a HeatShield system the way it should, and a bad fit is worse than no cap at all. This page covers which models this applies to, what fails first, honest San Jose pricing, and when you can just skip the visit.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield’s cap and crown systems are designed to work with their Cease-Fire and Eco-Fire liner families, plus their masonry crown coat products. If your chimney has a HeatShield label on the cap, crown, or paperwork from a prior liner job, it’s almost certainly one of these two lines. The practical compatibility question is flue dimension: HeatShield caps are sized by the inside diameter of the flue tile or liner, not the outside measurement of the chimney. This is the single most common ordering mistake we see in San Jose. A homeowner measures the outside of the chimney, buys a cap by that number, and it shows up three inches too big.

We install both HeatShield-brand caps and quality equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney when the spec matches. For a Cease-Fire stainless liner, we typically recommend a HeatShield or Gelco cap with a built-in screen rated for continuous-duty gas or oil. For an Eco-Fire clay tile reline, a standard multi-flue or single-flue cap with a proper chase top usually works fine. If you still have the HeatShield documentation, look for the flue size in the liner warranty card. If you don’t, we measure in person and confirm before ordering.

One thing worth knowing: HeatShield’s coated caps hold up better against the marine-layer mornings and dry summer heat we get in San Jose than plain galvanized steel does. The coated versions cost more up front, but we’ve pulled ten-year-old coated caps off San Jose houses that still had years of life left. Bare galvanized caps near the coast often start showing rust blooms in half that time.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • You can see daylight through the cap or the cap is missing. This is the obvious one. A missing cap means rain, birds, squirrels, and debris have an open channel into your flue. In San Jose’s wet winters, this is how liners soak and crack.
  • Rust streaks running down the flue tile or chase. Rusting hardware or a deteriorating cap body lets water follow the bolt holes down into the flue. Streaking means the cap is failing, not just old. If you can see rust from the ground, it’s time to replace the cap, not repaint it.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. A properly capped flue should stay dry even in a solid San Jose downpour. If you get water pooling in the firebox after a storm, the cap, crown, or flashing is compromised. A HeatShield cap with an intact crown coat shouldn’t let this happen.
  • Drafting problems and smoky rooms. A cap that’s dented, bird-nested, or creosote-crusted restricts the flue and pushes smoke into the house. We see this a lot in San Jose’s older ranch homes where caps haven’t been touched in decades, especially near the foothills where wind-loading bends thin caps and collapses the screen.
  • Birds or squirrels in your flue. The screen on a HeatShield cap is meant to keep animals out. If you hear scratching or chirping in your chimney, the screen has failed or the cap is gone entirely. Animal intrusion is a sign the cap is no longer doing its job, not just a pest problem.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Jose, a HeatShield-compatible chimney cap replacement lands between $425 and $780 installed for most single-flue homes. The range shifts based on the cap’s material (standard stainless runs lower; coated or copper runs higher), flue diameter (anything over 13 inches costs more, as do odd-sized flues), roof pitch and access (a steep roof adds labor), and whether the chase top or crown needs sealing at the same time.

Here’s what that includes when you work with us: the cap itself, the labor to remove the old cap and install the new one, new hardware and sealing, and a written price before we start. You’ll see the number on paper before any work begins, and the number on the invoice is the same number you saw on that paper. The repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap installation fails within the first year, we come back and fix it at no charge. We also clean the flue during the same visit when it needs it, which is worth doing while we’re already on the roof.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground: whether the cap is visibly missing, if you can see rust or damage with binoculars, and whether birds are hanging around the top of your flue. What you shouldn’t do is get on a roof without proper fall protection, especially on a two-story San Jose home with a steep pitch. A wet shake or tile roof in October is not where you want to find out your ladder is too short.

Beyond the fall risk, the reason most DIY cap installs fail is the fit and the seal. You can order what looks like the right HeatShield cap online and still end up with a gap between the cap base and flue because the dimension was wrong. That gap lets water in and you won’t know until winter. We carry the common sizes and know how to seal a cap to a HeatShield crown so it actually stays put. If you want an honest recommendation rather than a guess, call us at (669) 266-5073 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you if it needs a visit or if it can wait.
