Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Inspection in San Jose: What to Know First

We inspect HeatShield chimney systems throughout San Jose, and most inspections take about 45 to 90 minutes depending on the home and the flue setup. A standard Level 2 camera inspection runs between $249 and $399, and we hand you a written report with photos before we leave the driveway. If you own a HeatShield liner or coating system and haven’t had it looked at in a while, this page is for you. Call (669) 266-5073 and a live person picks up, day or night.

How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

HeatShield’s Cerfractory coating gets applied to the inside of a clay flue liner, and most of what we find in San Jose homes comes down to how the original application has aged or how the flue has shifted since. Here’s what shows up most often:

  • HeatShield Joint Repair System separation. On JRS installations (the joint-sealing system for clay liners), the fill material can separate from the clay at the mortar joints. This happens when the underlying liner tiles have shifted from house settling or seismic activity. In San Jose, where adobe soil expands and contracts with wet winters and dry summers, we see this more than you’d expect. The fix is usually a reapplication at the failed joints after the flue is cleaned and prepped.
  • CeCure coating spalling around the smoke chamber. HeatShield’s CeCure resurfacing system holds up well on smooth flue walls, but the smoke chamber area is rough and irregular. When the bond fails there, you’ll see flaking material falling onto the smoke shelf. We find this during camera inspection, and it usually means the area wasn’t prepped correctly the first time. We grind and reapply.
  • Water intrusion behind FireGuard-coated liners. If a FireGuard application was done over a liner that already had water staining, the coating can trap moisture inside the flue wall. Over San Jose winters, that moisture cycles and pushes the coating off in sheets. We fix the crown and flashing first, then recoat after the flue has properly dried.
  • Improper thickness on aftermarket reapplications. HeatShield requires specific mil thickness per product line. When we inspect homes where a different contractor did a recoat, we often find areas below spec because someone thinned the material to stretch it. A camera inspection with measurement tells us fast whether the coat is thick enough to be warrantable.
  • Cracked clay behind intact-looking HeatShield. The coating can bridge over a cracked clay tile and look fine on a surface scan. Camera inspection with proper lighting shows the crack shadow underneath. This matters because the structural integrity of the flue still depends on the clay, not the coating. If the clay has shifted badly, a coating won’t save it and you’re looking at liner replacement instead.

Every one of these gets documented with photos before we recommend anything. You see what we see.

Our HeatShield Chimney Inspection Process

Here’s how a HeatShield-specific inspection goes at a San Jose home, step by step:

  1. 1
You call. A person answers at (669) 266-5073 and asks a few questions about your fireplace, how old the HeatShield application is, and what prompted the call. We book a window, not a vague “sometime Tuesday.”
  2. 2
We arrive and lay down protection. Tarps go down before anything else, and the technician walks you through what we’ll be doing. If you have the original HeatShield paperwork, that helps us know which system was applied and when.
  3. 3
Level 1 or Level 2 inspection. We start with the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, and flue. If you’ve had recent work, a fire event, or are buying or selling the home, we go straight to a Level 2 camera inspection. The camera goes up the full flue length and we record everything.
  4. 4
We review the footage together. This is the part most San Jose homeowners tell us they appreciated. We don’t hand you a report and bolt. We sit down and go through the camera footage frame by frame, pointing out what’s normal, what’s worn, and what needs attention now versus what can wait a year or two.
  5. 5
You get a written price if work is needed. If the HeatShield coating needs repair, you get a flat written price before we pack up. No phone calls later with revised numbers. If the flue is fine, we tell you that too, and you pay only the inspection fee.
  6. 6
Cleanup and the guarantee. We leave the hearth cleaner than we found it, and if we did any repair work, the written guarantee is in your hand before we leave. That guarantee covers the repair for 365 days under the Kingswell Guarantee. If it fails, we come back at no charge.

What HeatShield Chimney Inspection Costs in San Jose

Most HeatShield inspections in San Jose fall between $249 and $399 for a Level 2 camera inspection, which is what we recommend for any HeatShield system that hasn’t been looked at in five or more years. A basic Level 1 visual runs $149 to $199. Here’s what moves the price:

  • Flue height. A two-story home or a steep roof pitch pushes the job toward the higher end because of ladder work and roof safety gear.
  • Access. Tight attic crawl spaces or zero-clearance fireplace enclosures with limited access add time.
  • What we find. If the inspection turns up repair work, that’s quoted separately and in writing, so the invoice matches the number we gave you at the door.
  • Real estate transactions. If you’re selling or buying in San Jose, a Level 2 with a written report for the file runs at the standard rate, and we turn reports around same day in most cases.

Why San Jose Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney San Jose for HeatShield Work

We’ve been working chimneys since 2002, and we’ve inspected or repaired more HeatShield systems in San Jose than we can count, from older ranch homes near Willow Glen to downtown condos with zero-clearance units. Nathan Corliss trained at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and spent close to two decades working flues up and down California before settling into this market, and the crew runs on his rule: say the price first, explain the work, put the promise in writing. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, not a factory authorized dealer, which means we recommend the right fix for your flue whether that’s a HeatShield recoat or a DuraFlex or Gelco liner when the clay underneath is beyond saving. Every repair gets a written guarantee, and a free second visit if the repair fails inside 365 days. Uniformed, background-checked techs show up at the door, and the phone never goes to a voicemail loop.
